Mixed Messages: the beauty behind the "selfie"

The world can be such a confusing place. It’s full of so many mixed messages about who we are and who we are supposed to be. Lately there has been such an abundance of articles demonizing this popular concept of the “selfie.” I want to look at it from a different angle today.

The world puts so much emphasis on beauty- no wait, scratch that- the world puts so much emphasis on their photoshopped, flawless, impossible, never changing, never aging definition of beauty.  The world tells us “you are beautiful in your own unique way.” Yet, it constantly is shoving tall emaciated flawlessly enhanced models in our faces. It really has done a lot of damage to the way we view ourselves, and therefore the way we view the world.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. Psalm 139:14

In the original Hebrew text of the Bible, the word fearfully means: “with great reverence, heart-felt interest and with respect. The word wonderfully means: unique, set apart, marvelous.” The God who dug out the oceans and built the mountains took a special and earnest interest in creating YOU. He didn’t just pour a mold. He didn’t just carelessly throw you together because he needed another human to fill the planet. He stitched you together with the greatest of care, and then marveled at your beauty. He placed inside of you a soul and a plan. He was in awe of his creation and all of it’s potential. You are awesomely and marvelously made, and you have been given a purpose. Don’t forget that you are unique and that you have a special job to do in serving our awesome God and serving others that only you can do. No one else can fill your shoes.

“So what does my selfie have to do with it?” You ask. Well, for the first time in a long time, we have the power to redefine our definition. We have the tools to say what beauty is. It’s right in the palm of our hand. You see, I think it’s silly, and a bit confusing for me to say to you that you are God’s masterpiece, fearfully and wonderfully made and beautiful in his eyes and then proceed to demonize you for wanting to show that beauty to the world or being proud of who God made you to be.

If you’ve read anything I’ve written, you know that I wholeheartedly believe and proclaim that true and real soul deep beauty comes from a heart that is wholly given to Jesus Christ. That is the most important beauty for us to pursue. Time spent in the word of God beats time spent in front of the mirror any day. We can grasp at the impossible standard that the world has set for us or sit at the feet of Jesus and be confident in our God- who he is, what he has done, and who he has created us to be.

Im certainly not condoning narcissism. {We all know that girl who can’t stop posting selfies.}  That’s not the path of beauty either. Baiting people for virtual likes to fill a void in our own life is not God’s plan for his daughters. Competing with others, getting our self esteem from what people can see on the outside, or shamelessly baring our bodies on the internet – those are all marks of the woman of the world not the woman of God that we are growing to look like.

However, God does want us to be confident in our Creator, feel loved by Him, and be proud of the beautiful masterpiece He has crafted and is still working on. He looks on us with love and pride when we have a heart for him and when we truly understand where our identity is and our true beauty lies. He wants that for me and for you and for your mom and your sister and your future daughters.

So, go ahead, girls, click away. Show the world what real beauty looks like. Show the world what the work of God’s hand looks like when it’s truly “unaltered.” Lets change the way we look at ourselves and the way others see us. Let’s show the world the confident glow of a girl after Christ’s heart.
