The World's a Stage

I wasn’t going to write a post about this… I didn’t want to give it any more publicity than it was already getting, but my heart is heavy with this.

Sunday night, Miley Cyrus did what we didn’t think was possible anymore… she shocked the world with her sexually explicit and vulgar performance. Of course, it is disgusting. Of course, it is sad. I am sad for Miley that she thought she had to do that. I am sad that she would stoop so low to get attention and shock and offend so many people. I am sad that she doesn’t have anyone to tell her to cut it out. I am sad for her.

However, more than that, I am broken. My heart is broken for the wide-eyed little girls in the audience of that performance and many others just like it. My heart is broken for our little girls who sit at home and watch these women on television and have no one to wrap their arms around them and say,  “No… that’s not it. That’s not how it’s supposed to be.”

We can tweet about and and talk about it all we want, but what are we doing about it?

Ladies, what are we doing? There are little girls watching us. They are looking to see how we will respond. They are looking at our lives. They are listening to our words. They are watching our actions. They are looking through our pictures. They are looking at our clothes. They are watching us. How are we showing them what it IS supposed to be? We desperately need ladies who will seek after God. Ladies who will take time to look into a little girls eyes and say, “Hey, you are special to God. He loves you. Love Him back.” Someone who will take a little time to show them that living for God is a JOY no matter what comes their way. They need someone to step out of their own world and reach into theirs. They need us to follow Christ because whether we know it or like it or not, they are looking at us with those same eyes trying to decide which path they will choose….. the path of the world or the path of the Savior.

How can we do that if we ourselves are so wishy-washy about what we want out of life? Oh, girls, take a stand! Don’t be like these Miley Cyruses who don’t care that God has made them a wonderful, beautiful woman who deserves love and respect. Plant your feet in the perfect path of Christ and prepare to do battle with the enemy. Satan has his soldiers. He has so many fighting on his behalf. Where is God’s brave army of godly girls who will bear His name and walk the path of righteousness?

And men, what are you doing? How are you living to show younger girls and boys that this is not ok? Girls look at you too. They watch who you give your attention to. They watch what you look at on TV. How are you telling them which path they should choose? It absolutely blows my mind that guys get a free pass in this area. Men do not understand the affect they can have on women simply in standing up for purity….. NOT just in words, but in their actions. Sure someone can talk the talk all they want. They can tweet all day about how they want a godly girl, but if they are following and chasing the ungodly ones, what message are they really sending to young women? They are telling them that it doesn’t matter. They are telling them they will only get attention if they dress disrespectfully to themselves, God, and the world around them. They are telling them they have to be loose and flirty and flaunt themselves to get even the CHRISTIAN men. That is so sad. We desperately need men who will stand for purity for women’s sake so that we can match what we hear with what we see. Where are the men who will have the integrity to fight for purity? Little girls are watching you too.

Young boys desperately need brave MEN to stand and tell them that it’s not okay. They need adults who are grown enough to turn it off. They need to be protected from all that is evil with all that is in our power. Men, open your mouths-I beg of you- and proclaim the pure truth of the Bible and then dare to live it out. God needs an army of warriors that will stand and brandish the word of God and lead our families in purity and godliness.

Our world truly is a stage. Not to act, but to truly back up what we live. Men and women, our lives are put on display for the little ones who do watch our every move. What are we doing to prove that we mean it and truly believe what we preach and claim to love? There is only one Miley Cyrus, but there are thousands, maybe millions of us. We can personally make it our mission to come along side the younger generation, and say as the Apostle Paul did in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow me as I follow Christ.”

It’s our time to shine. Who is with me?

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Colossians 3:5-10

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John 2:16-17

  1. Thank you for doing the post! No one ever wants to say the hard things, and even fewer want to hear it. We can’t be mentally lazy and not pay attention to what society is teaching our young people. What people don’t seem to understand is that there is real love and concern there, not judgment. Our hearts ache for the young people who are getting the wrong messages. Thanks for being a voice in the darkness.

  2. Amen! We may not have the status and attention that Miley does but we have a “stage” of our own which is our life and just like her we can choose daily what we want to tell the world around us what we believe in and stand for. It’s so important for us to remember that we are role models whether we want to be or not and we need to do our best to represent God’s character and be His light to those young girls and boys who taking example from us. Thank you for such a timely (and much needed) post.

  4. Not just young girls but elderly women were watching this, as I heard about it when I went around giving baths to my residents. One 98 year old described it as shameful.

  5. Lauren, you speak the truth and you do it well. This is a fantastic post. I have been trying to put into words what I felt about Miley’s performance and I just couldn’t. Maybe it was the shock. But this is perfect. God gave you an amazing gift and I’m glad to see you are doing a wonderful job in spreading His word about topics that everyone is talking about.
